Shopify vs WooCommerce: how to choose for your business

Both platforms can run a good store. The right choice depends on how you sell, who will run the store, what you need it to connect to and which payment methods you must support.

The short answer

Choose Shopify if you want a managed platform where hosting, core security and updates are handled for you, and your payment methods are supported. Choose WooCommerce if you want more control over design and behaviour, already use WordPress, or need something a hosted platform makes awkward, and you are happy to host and maintain it.

For a store in Pakistan, check payment options before anything else. Shopify’s own list of countries where Shopify Payments is available does not include Pakistan (we checked it in October 2026; availability can change, so confirm before you build), so a Shopify store here relies on third-party payment providers and often cash on delivery. See the sources below.

The two platforms in one paragraph each

Shopify

Shopify is a hosted platform: Shopify runs the servers and the checkout, and you pay a plan plus any paid apps. You get a consistent admin and a large app store, with less technical responsibility. Our Shopify development service covers themes, catalogue setup, checkout, migration and integrations.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. You host it yourself (or have someone host it), which gives you more freedom to customise and own your data, and more responsibility for speed, security and updates. See WooCommerce development and WordPress.

Costs on both platforms include more than the platform itself: themes, extensions or apps, payment fees, development time and, for WooCommerce, hosting. Compare the full picture for your situation, not headline plan prices. Our guide to what a website costs in Pakistan covers this.

Questions that decide it

  • Who will run the store day to day, and how technical are they?
  • Which payment methods and couriers must you support, and do they have reliable integrations for the platform?
  • How big will the catalogue become, and does it have complex options such as B2B pricing?
  • Do you already use WordPress for content, and do you want one system for both?
  • Do you need custom checkout rules or integrations that a hosted platform restricts?

Payments, couriers and local needs

This is where most Pakistani stores are decided. List the payment methods your customers use, including cash on delivery, and confirm that each is supported on the platform you are considering. Then do the same for couriers and accounting.

Connecting orders to couriers and accounting saves time and reduces errors; our guide to connecting your store to couriers and accounting explains what to set up first, and the ecommerce integrations service does the work. If neither platform fits your workflow, custom ecommerce is the third option.

Speed, search and growth

A fast store converts and ranks better than a slow one on either platform. App and plugin bloat is the usual cause of slow stores, so keep extras to what you really use. Read Core Web Vitals explained and see website performance. Product and category pages also need clear titles, descriptions and structure; see SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move from one platform to the other later?

Yes, but it is a migration project: products, customers, URLs and redirects must be planned. It is easier to choose well at the start. See website redesign for how we protect search visibility.

Is Shopify or WooCommerce better for SEO?

Neither wins by default. Results depend on site speed, structure, content and technical setup. Both can be configured well or badly.

Which is cheaper?

It depends on what you need. A simple store may be cheaper on a hosted plan; a store needing custom behaviour may be cheaper on WooCommerce. Compare total cost, including apps, extensions, hosting and development.

Can I accept cash on delivery?

Both platforms can support it, usually with a setting or an extension. Check how it works with your courier’s collection and settlement process.
